What you will learn

University degrees in education are becoming a requirement for a teaching position, and the need for innovative medical and health educators is growing. Our health care system needs today and in the future pedagogical teaching staff who can pass on cutting-edge scientific knowledge from a variety of disciplines, using the most modern evidence-based techniques, with passion and fun. We provide you with important actionable skills for this in the master's program in Medical and Health Education.

Changes in the professional laws governing many health professions are increasing the requirements for academic qualifications for teachers. While a bachelor's degree in medical pedagogy qualifies you for practical teaching, a master's degree is required for use in theoretical teaching and for taking examinations at vocational schools in the healthcare sector. Our  Master's program in Medical and Health Education meets these nationwide quality requirements for teachers at vocational schools in the health care sector. However, you should obtain information on the requirements for hiring medical educators from the relevant ministries in the relevant federal state as these may differ between states.

To optimally expand your competencies, our master's degree program in Medical and Health Education ties in with the bachelor's degree program in Medical Education. This allows you to expand your existing skills and abilities and to acquire new competencies. Based on the Thuringian Teaching Education Act (2008), we deal with three major focal points.

  1. Educational science and vocational pedagogy: You learn to design teaching and learning situations professionally and to view the research sector from the perspective of pedagogy. Consequently, your study content is structured as interactive and interdisciplinary learning units in the form of problem-based learning. This also includes the acquisition of competence-oriented, pedagogical teaching and learning methods. In addition, you will acquire and deepen your knowledge of professional teaching and learning processes, educational psychology, and the structures as well as concepts of health and nursing didactics.
  2. First professional specialization: In this specialization, you acquire in-depth knowledge and skills on health science topics. Your focus in this case is on working independently on an interdisciplinary research project. A possible focus of your work may be, for example, mental health in the teaching profession, public health or the field of epidemiology and health services research.
  3. Second professional specialization: This specialization enables you to work independently and case-oriented in the health sciences,  using evidence-based, modern and pedagogical content. Consequently, you will acquire competencies in dealing with multimorbidity and chronic diseases, and in clinical diagnostics and the related didactic models.
Your career prospects

Our innovative approach that pays off

Your career opportunities could not be more diverse.

The qualification requirements for teachers in initial, further, and continuing education at vocational schools for health care professions or schools in the health care sector are regulated differently in the individual federal states. The professionalization of the education system and the advancing academization of the health care professions have led to the devloping need for teachers to have a corresponding university degree to train at vocational schools for health care professions or schools in the health care sector. Since training at schools for health care professions is not regulated uniformly in the individual federal states, there are different formal qualification requirements for teachers. If necessary, the ministry responsible will inform you about the hiring requirements specific to each federal state.

Our master's degree program in Medical and Health Education prepares you for teaching positions in theory and practice:

  • at vocational schools in the healthcare sector (nursing specialist, curative education, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, emergency paramedics and medical-technical assistance such as MTAF, MTRA, MTLA)
  • in extracurricular and in-company training and continuing education
  • in the academic training of health care professions at universities

In addition, the program qualifies you for professional pedagogical activities in various institutions and companies:

  • in personnel and organizational development as well as in quality management of health care companies
  • in associations, organizations, health insurance companies and other health and social care institutions
  • Management of multi-professional teams in health and social care institutions
  • Pedagogical consulting of professional helpers, patients and relatives in outpatient care centers

From Bachelor to Master

A Master's degree has many advantages!

Due to the amendment of the occupational laws of the health care professions, the requirements for the academic qualification of teachers are increasing. While a bachelor's degree qualifies teachers for on-the-job teaching, a master's degree is required for use in theoretical instruction and for taking examinations at vocational schools in the health care sector. The decision to hire faculty is determined by state-specific hiring requirements. Our School of Health has developed a master's degree program in medical and health education that builds on the already established bachelor's degree program and is based on the structure of the program for teaching at vocational schools in terms of content and organization.

This offers you the best career prospects.

In conversation with a graduate and mother of three Franziska Adler

Maybe you are hesitant about pursuing your dream study of Medical and Health Pedagogy, because you think it might be incompatible with your family and job.  We understand your concerns and are here to help take away this fear. Most of our students study part-time in one of our exciting bachelor's and master's programs. We, as a health science university, not only teach health, we also live it.  We know about our responsibility for an optimal work-life-study balance. Due to our monthly block events, it is not uncommon for families to arrive together with toddlers to crawling across the hallways of the university or sitting in the lecture together with their parents.

Certainly, it hasn't always been easy to combine family and studies. How did you cope with this challenge?

Of course, you had to set aside and take times when you devoted yourself exclusively to your studies. Of course, I also had to rely on the support of family and friends. With good time management and a healthy work ethic during attendance times, I was able to take big and small steps towards success.

To what extent was the SRH University of Applied Health Sciences able to support you in this?

In addition to the excellent, very practical teaching, it was above all the study model that enabled me to reconcile children and studies. Due to the block weekends, there were many factors that simplified my daily study routine. For example, it was no problem to come to the university with the children. I also found some peace and quiet in the breastfeeding room when I needed it. On the part of the lecturers, it was always possible - due to the very close and personal contact - to find a quick and uncomplicated solution to any problems that arose. They always had an open ear in this regard.

Do you think you would have successfully completed your studies without the opportunities that the SRH University of Applied Health Sciences offered you?

That is of course difficult to judge from today's perspective. Nevertheless, I believe that the part-time study model in particular, as well as certainly the full-time model in block form and the scheduling of the block weekends, were extremely practical, since it was thus possible to combine family life and the demands of the studies. In any case, I am convinced that without the opportunities it would have been very difficult to successfully complete my studies. The close proximity of the university to the Hofwiesenpark, with its playground, miniature golf course and numerous meadows for playing soccer, made it even easier for my husband to keep the children occupied during my lectures.

How would you rate the work-life balance during your studies?

Besides work, family and studies, it is of course not always easy to find time for sports or reading a book. Of course, there were stressful phases, especially during the exam period, which should not be concealed. All in all, however, I think that I was always able to find a balance between work and my studies and my private life during my time at university. This was due on the one hand to the external factors that the SRH University of Applied Sciences and my self-management, and on the other hand to my husband, who looked after our three children during lectures.
