What you will learn

The proportion of older people in our population is growing steadily, along with the increasing complexity of disease patterns and the rising demand for lifelong health. This is already creating a need for specialized professionals in all areas of medicine, particularly in the dental practice. Elderly patients with general diseases and special needs also require competent and individual treatment, which necessitates the appropriate know-how. Dental hygienists, with all their comprehensive qualifications, are already in high demand, and this demand is set to increase in the future.

With your bachelor's degree in Dental Hygienist, you will acquire the necessary knowledge and practical skills you need to perform complex tasks in dental prevention and therapy of dental, oral and maxillofacial diseases. You  will act as a bridge  between dentists and patients and  be able to carry out complex preventive measures and periodontal treatments under the supervision and responsibility of a dentist.  The  bachelor's degree program Dental Hygienist allows you to develop and implement preventive strategies in dental practice.

The dental services that you can provide are based on the German Dental Association’s "Delegation Framework for Dental Hygienists" and  § 1 Para. 5+6 of the German Dentistry Act.

Although there is a decline in periodontitis cases, demographic shifts and tooth preservation into old age are resulting in the number periodontal treatment for patients with  pre-existing conditions. These are patients who take multiple medications and need more assistance in taking care of oral hygiene at home. Increasing caries polarization in children - especially children from socially weaker structures – is making possible professional risk management and long-term care for young patients indispensable.

In the Dental Hygienist Bachelor’s program you will acquire important skills for your future career:

These include, for example, general medical skills to meet the needs mentioned above. In addition, we teach you scientific skills for dental hygiene and prevention management. These are important to keep continuously up to date with changes and opportunities in your field of activity. And you will develop the communication skills you will need for advising a wide variety of patient groups. All of these acquired skills, both technical and practical, can be applied at the practice partners, which benefit your employer and not to mention, your patients during your studies.

Your career prospects

Our innovative approach that pays off

Details about the study model and internship

With us, you will follow the full-time study model in the block structure, typical for our university. The attendance times are compressed into blocks which makes it easy for you to balance your studies with your professional activities and your private requirements.

Your studies are based on three pillars: 1) a one-week attendance phase per month at our university at the Rhineland Campus in Leverkusen, 2) practical transfer at your employer or your practice partner, and 3) the self-study phase. This innovative, practice-integrated study model can offer you a very good balance between your studies, professional activities and family, and you can still study fulltime.

You can shorten your studies to 2 years / 4 semesters if you already have relevant work experience in this field. You will then enter directly into the 3rd semester.
