About me

Prof. Dr. habil. Jan Mehrholz, is head of the master's program in neurorehabilitation at the SRH Hochschule für Gesundheit at the Gera campus and head of the bachelor's programs in physiotherapy and occupational therapy (concurrent training and part-time model).

After training as a physiotherapist, graduating in 1997, he was employed as a physiotherapist at the Bavaria Clinic in Kreischa. In 2005 he graduated part-time at the University of Magdeburg with a Bachelor of Science and in 2006 he completed his postgraduate studies in Health Sciences/Public Health, which he finished with a Master's degree in Public Health at the Medical Faculty of the TU Dresden. Subsequently, he received his doctorate (Dr. rer. medic) at the TU Dresden in 2007. After successful habilitation, he was appointed private lecturer with teaching qualification (venia legendi) in health sciences/public health at the Medical Faculty of the TU Dresden in 2010 and has been a university professor (apl.) in research and teaching there since 2020.

Prof. Dr. habil. Mehrholz is a reviewer for numerous internationally renowned journals such as Stroke, Neurorehabilitation, and Neural Repair, and an honorary editor of the Cochrane Stroke Group based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has been a Visiting Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at California State University, Long Beach, USA.

He has edited the journal "neuroreha" published by Thieme for more than 15 years.

He and his team have published a total of more than 30 Cochrane publications (full reviews, updates, and protocols). His research is related to evidence-based rehabilitation after stroke, in Parkinson's disease, after spinal cord injury, polyneuropathy and myopathy in critical illness, and other neurological diseases.

He is the third chairman of the German Society for Neurotraumatology and Clinical Neurorehabilitation and was the 2022 congress president for the joint annual meeting of Germany's two largest professional societies for neurological rehabilitation DGNKN and DGNR in Dresden.

On December 06, 2018, Prof. Dr. habil. Jan Mehrholz the prestigious H. J. Bauer Rehabilitation Prize, which was awarded by the German Society for Neurology (DGN) and German Society for Neurological Rehabilitation (DGNR).

  • Effectiveness of gait training in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).
  • Electromechanical-assisted gait rehabilitation after stroke
  • Electromechanical-assisted arm rehabilitation after stroke
  • Evidence of neurological rehabilitation
